Theme: Pollution

As society has developed, so has our usage of natural and synthetic chemicals, which we have to dispose of. Starting for real with the industrial age, we have constantly spread harmful (both to humans and to the rest of the environment) and benign substances around us - both on purpose and inadvertently. Contaminants include persistant organic pollutants (POPs, such as DDT, dioxins, PCB and chlordane), radioactive substances (uranium, polonium, plutonium and others), tropospheric ozone depleting substances (ODS - such as freons and other CFCs), heavy metals and toxic metals (cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel, chromium), oil and other fuels, nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorous - that cause eutrophication), greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour and others that increase the greenhouse effect and cause climate change) and many more chemical substances. See also our graphics on waste (including hazardous waste). Through the circulatory systems of the world, in oceans, rivers and atmosphere, pollutants are transported far from where they were released. One special theme under pollution is the pollutants that we are releasing right now where we are not aware of the effects, and the issues related to the precautionary principle.

Potential environmental hazards in the Caspian Sea Region

Oil slicks glittering on the surface of the sea and thousands of hectares of soil penetrated by oil leaking from abandoned wells are just part of the pollution that people living around the Caspian [..]

Polar bear sub-populations and pollution

There are thought to be between 20,000 and 25,000 bears in the world, which occur in19 relatively discrete sub-populations, some of which are shared between nations. Topping the food chain in the [..]

Origin and destination of selected invasive/alien species

Invasive and alien species that are brought into a new environment, either on purpose or by accident, can quickly exploit ecological niches that are not fully covered by indigenous (local) species. [..]

Ratio of protected areas in the Balkans

The Balkans boast an exceptional wealth of biodiversity of flora and fauna. The main threat to species is increasing anthropogenic pressures such as hunting, farming and the collection of medicinal [..]

Murre colonies and human activities

The thick-billed murre and common murre have ranges 1,000,000 km2 and number in the millions or tens of millions of breeding pairs. However global populations are declining, although increases have [..]

Emissions of carbon dioxide, in Africa and selected OECD countries

Africa represents only a small fraction, 3.6%, out of the total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, yet 14% of the population of the world lives here. The emissions per inhabitant in Libya, the [..]

Biodiversity loss: state and scenarios 2006 and 2050

These projections of biodiversity loss from 2000 to 2050 were produced by the GLOBIO consortium for UNEP's Global Environment Outlook 4. Across the GEO scenarios and regions, global biodiversity [..]

Overview on glacier changes since the end of the Little Ice Age

Glaciers and ice caps reached their Holocene (the past 10 000 years) maximum extent in most mountain ranges throughout the world towards the end of the Little Ice Age, between the 17th and mid-19th [..]

Balkans: hazardous industrial sites, water pollution and mining hot spots

The environmental legacy associated with extraction industries is all too familiar. Badly operated or abandoned mining sites have already caused severe pollution, some with impacts spilling across [..]
