Theme: Marine

The sea areas of the world make up more than 70% of the planet Earth, as seen from space. The marine environment represents an important part of the climate system as well as for the biosphere. Most of the life is focused to the surfaces and the coastal areas though. The marine environment provides fish and other livelihoods, as well as other important ecosystem services. Important environmental issues here are pollution, development of fisheries, eutrophication (nutrient pollution), overexploitation - such as overfishing and climate change (including sea level rise).

Sea level change: estimations and predictions

This resource includes four graphics that explain sea level change, an expected consequence of climate change. The first graphic, 'Relative Sea Level Over the Past 300 Years', shows the changes in sea [..]

Causes of sea level rise from climate change

A significant sea level rise is one of the major anticipated consequences of climate change. This graphic explains the causes of sea level change according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate [..]

Trends in sea level, 1870-2006

Coastal and island tide-gauge data show that sea level rose by just under 20 cm between 1870 and 2001, with an average rise of 1.7 mm per year during the 20th century and with an increase in the rate [..]

Sea level rise due, past and scenarios due to global warming

Over the last 100 years, the global sea level has risen by about 10 to 25 cm. Sea level change is difficult to measure. Relative sea level changes have been derived mainly from tide-gauge data. In the [..]

Sea level rise: Costa Rica coastal communities under threat

Sea level rise is an important indicator of climate change. A rise in sea level may result in flooding, salinisation of fresh water, coastal erosion and in some cases loss of land to the ocean. As [..]

Estimated contributions to sea-level rise (1993-2003)

The two main reasons for sea-level rise are thermal expansion of ocean waters as they warm, and increase in the ocean mass, principally from land-based sources of ice (glaciers and ice caps, and the [..]

Impact of Sea Level Rise in Banjul, Gambia

Climate change is expected to cause a rise in sea level. Sea level rise will have a significant impact on coastal areas, especially coastal megacities such as Banjul, the Gambia. This graphic shows [..]

Projected sea-level rise for the 21st century

The projected range of global averaged sea-level rise from the IPCC 2001 Assessment Report for the period 1990 to 2100 is shown by the lines and shading. The updated AR4 IPCC projections made are [..]

Population, area and economy affected by a 1 m sea level rise (global and regional estimates, based on today's situation)

Even for today’s socio-economic conditions, both regionally and globally, large numbers of people and significant economic activity are exposed to sea-level rise. The densely populated megadeltas are [..]

Nile Delta: Potential Impact of Sea Level Rise

The potential impacts of sea level rise on the Nile Delta are expected to include a decline in water quality that would affect freshwater fish, the flooding of agricultural land and damage to [..]

Sea level rise due to the melting of mountain and subpolar glaciers

Oceans change as a result of the impact of climatic variability on glaciers and ice caps that further contributes to fluctuation sin sea leve. Observational and modelling studies of glaciers and ice [..]

Scenarios of sea level rise, now - 2100

Using the IS92 emission scenarios, projected global mean sea level increases relative to 1990 were calculated up to 2100. Taking into account the ranges in the estimate of climate sensitivity and ice [..]
